It never worked for me on my Toshiba Satellite A215 from 9.10 up to recent 10.10
Googling for while, have tried lots of stuff and still nothing. In Skype I can't change PulseAudio to anything different even though I've installed Alsa.

Any fresh ideas?

I would suggest installing Ubuntu 10.04, I did this recently, a fresh install on my Toshiba p200-1ee and microphone worked fine without any additional tweaking.
