I had to resort back to a standard Input checkbox with a "value" attribute. According to Blackberry documentation, “value” is a required attribute for this control by W3C standards and the ASP.Net control does not implement it. That seemed to solve the issue for me even *with* quite a few nested DIV tags. Also, I changed DOCTYPE to XHTML 1.1 Basic and run the resulting output through an HTML validator to be sure there were no tag issues.
